NewsAvro bomber kept alive by the synergy of private enterprise and volunteers Sunday, 27 Sep 2009
The last remaining flying Vulcan bomber added to the excitement of our Sunday afternoon courtesy of Manchester Airport. It was on route to the Southport Air show and made a brief, but dramatic, fly past.
Keeping this tribute to British engineering in flying condition is no mean feat as it battles with more mundane enemies of bureaucracy and old age. The bureaucracy of keeping an obsolete aircraft to meet 21st century flying regulations and the challenge of preserving the machinery as it undergoes the stresses of keeping the 79,500kg metal triangle airborne. On one hand, a squadron of enthusiasts work the internet, fund raising events and performances, meanwhile a team of full time professionals manages the engineering and paperwork. A national community event that reflects the same spirit of the Heald Green Business Club.. not that our community activities have any where near the same glamour as keeping the Vulcan flying!
